The founder and first president of Yagi was Yosaburo Yagi. 
More than 125 years since he decided to launch what has become Yagi & Co., his philosophy of “Sincerity at All Times” remains the bedrock that supports and the beacon that guides the company as it strives to blaze a trail to tomorrow.

Yagi Shoten cotton yarn company opens

 

Starts business in October 1893 with capital of 20,000 yen. The history of Yagi begins in a humble location, with an entrance about 15 feet wide and monthly rent of 8.25 yen.

Establishes new store on land purchased in Kyutaromachi, Osaka

Increases capital to 500,000 yen and makes company headquarters into a two-story, red-brick Western-style building

Establishes joint-stock company

 

Yagi Shoten is reorganized as a joint-stock company. The company is 25 years old and has more than 200 employees. The sales department is the focus of the company being established as a joint-stock company. The company’s operations are divided under a cotton yarn department, cotton department, trading department and Manchurian department, among which the trading department is strengthened.

Celebrates 25th anniversary (October 1918)

1940

Upgrades Tokyo Office (in Chuo-ku, Tokyo) to a branch office.

1943

Renames company Yagi KK.

1947
Renames company Yagi Shoten KK.

 

Upgrades Nagoya Office (in Naka-ku, Nagoya) to a branch office.

1964

Yagi acquires a stake in Kadota Lace Kojo KK (now subsidiary Violetta Corporation).

1967

Establishes Yagi Hong Kong Ltd. (subsidiary).

1968

Fukui Office (in Fukui-shi, Fukui) is promoted to a branch office.

1972

Completes construction of Yagi Building.

 

With two subterranean floors and nine floors above ground, the steel-frame reinforced concrete building features the most advanced facilities of the time.

Establishes Yagi Building Co., Ltd. (subsidiary).

1979

Establishes Nihon Puff Co., Ltd. (subsidiary).

1985

Opens a general textile showroom in Beijing, China.

1989

Renames company Yagi & Co., Ltd.

Opens Shanghai Office.

1991

Establishes Mars Co., Ltd. (subsidiary).

1993

Establishes Joy Living Co., Ltd. (subsidiary).

 

Merges with Mars Co., Ltd. in January 1997, adopting the Mars name after the merger.

1995

Yagi is listed in the Second Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange.

1999

Reorganizes the Nagoya Branch as the Nagoya branch office.

2011

Opens Ho Chi Minh City Office in Vietnam.

2013

Yagi is listed in the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

2014

Acquires Leaps and Bounds Inc. (now known as WEAVA Co., Ltd.) as a subsidiary.

2015

Yagi acquires a stake in Grace Co., Ltd., establishing the subsidiary Progress Thailand Co., Ltd.

2016

Yagi acquires Ichimen Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary.


Opens Dhaka Office in Bangladesh.

 

Repositions the Tokyo Branch as the Tokyo Head Office.

2017

Yagi acquires Yamaya Orimono Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary.


Yagi acquires Attachment YK (now Attachment Co., Ltd.) as a subsidiary.
 

Yagi signs a licensing agreement with Danish outdoor equipment provider Nordisk to promote the Yeti brand in Japan.

2018

Yagi celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding.

2019

Yagi acquires Tsubame Towel Co., Ltd. as a subsidiary.


 Formed a capital and business alliance with sitateru Inc., which operates the garment production platform "sitateru".

2020

 Formed a business alliance with the South Korean firm Lime Co., Ltd. for global sales of nanofiber products

 

Jointly established FMB Inc. with TFL Inc., which operates Japan's first fashion tech school.

2022

Established the new VISION of the YAGI Group.

 

Formed a capital and business alliance with the US firm swatchbook, which operates the world's largest 3D design and digital materials library.

2023

 Recognized under the 2023 Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program (Large Enterprise category).
